Fingerspelling is very important in ASL. 

Fingerspelling is used when you need to spell the name of locations/places, proper nouns, and supports in reading.  Here are some everyday tips.

 

Fingerspelling Tips:

  • Voice off when fingerspelling

  • Go at your pace

  • Keep palm toward the person

  • Hold wrist steady

  • Pause between words

  • Avoid spelling out loud/mouthing

  • Spell as fast as you read it

  • BE PATIENT 

Use Fingerspelling form the very beginning

  • use short simple words

  • spell names of people, places

  • Spell things that have no sign
