Adding More to the Conversation

Be on the lookout for ways you can add to the conversation, and move it forward.  You can:

Use Comments:

  • What your child is doing

  • Looking at

  • Interested in

  • or playing with

Use Questions:

  • Ask simple question,

  • Start with one-answer questions and then progress to harder ones

  • Always give your child a chance to respond

  • Focus on open questions instead of closed ones

Use Descriptor words:

  • How does it feel (textures)

  • How does it smell or taste

  • What size is it

  • Who gave it to you

By using these tips more vocabulary can be learned and used therefore adding to the richness of your child’s language.
