Let me tell you a quick story…
I left an abusive marriage and felt free, but I still had holes in my life that needed healing, and for the first time, I wondered if other people had begun to share their stories. Maybe there were even conferences I could go to and listen.
Then something happened that changed my life forever.
I was invited to listen to a sur-thriver’s story at a conference. Her story of how her husband beat her and set her on fire to teach her a lesson rocked my world. I made up my mind in that chair that I would get to know her and become strong enough to share my story and speak on the stage one day!
At the time, I had no idea the impact this would have.
The problem was I wanted to share my story, too, but I was a busy mom of 9, a teacher, and I had my Beacon of Light side hustle. At the time, I did not have the understanding to start my own conference—the technology, inviting people, reserving a venue, etc. I knew I could share my healing journey and how to help others, but how?
Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, DOUBTS and SHAME started to engulf me. Imposter syndrome snuck in and camped right beside my shame: Who the heck are you to create a conference to help victims of Domestic Violence? I was trying to work through this pain and shame, but all I wanted to do was run away.
That's when I truly hit rock bottom.
It was like I fell back into my victimhood, and all the success I had found vanished! I was worthless again. Who was I to think anyone would come to my little conference to help others heal from abuse to amplification? I could not book not Brene Brown, Bessel Kolk, or any other top expert. Who was I? A mom of 9, who had survived abuse, became a teacher and a writer. No real power there.
Then, something happened that changed everything.
I got up early in the dark morning to walk around my neighborhood to walk and talk with God.
The memory of the conference returned, and this time God said, “You are enough; You don’t need to prove anything to me. You are loved. Help others shine! Do the Conference Virtually”
It stopped me midstride, and a wave of emotion poured out of my eyes and down my face.
That was the spark I needed.
I praised God and thanked him sincerely. I found myself running back to the house, grabbing my notebook and frantically scribbling out the divine download the Lord was giving me. UNITE in LIGHT!!
Here’s what happened next.
I grabbed the planner and wrote the name of the conference, “UNITE in LIGHT,” over and over again! I then mapped out my conference schedule and the marketing plan. I knew the impact it could have on the women who needed healing from their abuse. After 3 hours, I reached out to 5 speakers and created an Eventbrite invitation. And in three weeks of intense Marketing, we held our first annual conference!
I was forever changed by the fact that
I learned for myself that I had created my own story of worthlessness, but in God’s eye, I was NEVER WORTH LESS! People wanted to hear about healing and how to change the face of DV forever! That all can be healed if we are brave enough to step out of our Comfort Cage and into the Learning Zone and listen to the speakers.
Now I went from falling back into my victimhood and worthlessness to empowerment to Feeling like a failure, knowing I was strong and confident enough to put on a conference that would rock the virtual world! I knew millions of women and men could find healing in the Light God had provided if they attended the conference!
What I'd like you to take away from all this is.
ALL are WORTHY to be healed, and our society deserves to have loving families and societies! People depend on you to find your light so that you can turn and amplify the light of the world. You are never to blame for the circumstances and abuse you have experienced, but it is your full responsibility to heal from it and not fall victim to it.
